James Middleton

I moved from Tasmania in 2014 to work in the marine tourism industry in the Whitsundays – the best spot in Australia to do that.

My secret skill

Ensuring we provide pristine and reliable boats to help make holidays memorable for the right reasons.

About James

Born into a sailing family, James Middleton was on the water before he could walk.

With a 12-year background in hospitality, catering and events, James was passionate about breaking into the marine tourism industry where he could combine his experience of creating memorable moments in people’s lives with his love of sailing.

Growing up in a sailing-mad family in Hobart, Tasmania, James has sailed his whole life including club racing and regattas as well as cruising around Tasmania and up and down the east coast of Australia.

Whether it was on family owned yachts or as crew on other boats, James has cruised most of the Tasmanian coast, crossed Bass Strait from Hobart to Melbourne and sailed from the Whitsundays to Magnetic Island, off Townsville. He’s also raced at Hamilton Island Race Week and several other regattas.

Now that he’s permanently based in the Whitsundays, he hires a boat about once a month and sails the region, staying overnight on the water.

“Sailing the Whitsundays is a pretty special experience. It’s a wonderful spot for cruising because there are short hops between islands, many places to explore and fantastic snorkelling spots. Also, the conditions are easy and the water temperature is warm all year. Sailing in winter here is quite different from sailing in Tassie!” he says.

“Monohulls are my favourite boats. I love the thrill of sailing and being pushed along by the wind with no engine running.

“Seeing the water from my office, talking about boats and sailing holidays and being around happy holiday makers is a great way to spend a working day.”

Best Whitsundays experience

Getting engaged! We chartered a boat to Lindeman Island where I popped the question on the beach. Luckily for me, she said yes and now we’re married.

Charterer’s tip

Bring a book. A Whitsundays holiday is about really switching off. When you’ve explored some of the many hidden nooks and crannies, sit on the deck, enjoy the breeze and immerse yourself in a good book.
