Hook Island has plenty of great snorkeling spots to explore. You won’t want to miss out of spending at least one night at Hook.
Butterfly Bay is just one of the areas and is located on the northern part of Hook Island. There is no anchoring in Butterfly Bay however plenty of moorings to pick up.
The best time to visit is the middle of the day when the light is brightest for viewing a range of beautiful fringing reefs, bommies and marine life.
Luncheon Bay offers beautiful fringing reefs; you may even see some wild goats on the rocks above the bay. There is also no anchoring due to deeper waters, however again there are plenty of moorings in this bay. Make sure you go looking for the ‘tunnel of love’, a beautiful swim through coral formation, located in the bay. You may even be lucky enough to spot the family of lion fish who live in the stanghorn coral.
On the south-east side of Hook Island you will find enough more great bays to drop anchor, such as; Mackerel Bay & Saba Bay. These two locations both have excellent fringing reefs for snorkelling, Mackerel Bay is a known hotspot for several species of turtle found in the Whitsundays.
